Simulink for Modeling Real-World Technological Disruptions in Power Systems

Modern PSP systems can capture accurate instrument transformer measurements during fault conditions, enabling detailed analysis of algorithm performance and verification of appropriate relay protection and automation settings. Incorrect settings, however, may expose equipment to electromechanical and thermal stresses, leading to potential damage or failure. Simulation-based modelling offers an effective approach to avoid such outcomes by improving the precision of protection system adjustments. In this study, the applicability of a developed simulation model for a transit 110 kV transmission line—supplied from 220 kV substation buses—was examined. The line is equipped with a comprehensive set of protection systems. The model’s performance was evaluated by comparing its results with AURA system records captured during the emergency shutdown of a 110 kV power line in the Voronezh Oblast. The findings demonstrate the model’s effectiveness in replicating real system behavior and its potential for enhancing the tuning of relay protection settings.
